Introducing ETN Talks: Latin America
The landscape of education has been changing tremendously over the past five to ten years and all of us involved in the process of student recruitment have recognised the necessity to adapt quickly in order to stay relevant in this environment.
To make sure you are informed about the hot topics and opportunities across emerging markets and to always keep you ahead of the game, we thought of a way to advance your knowledge and experience further. We are very proud to introduce ETN Talks as your personal navigator into the seas of international student mobility specifics.
ETN Talks are unique moments with the ultimate objective to inform, engage and inspire. Through the platform participants have the opportunity to gain valuable information on the local dynamics and trends related to education and job markets. By providing in-depth insights and understanding of the main issues that students from a particular country might face, we encourage our participants to reflect on a variety of issues and create discussions that would later lead to solutions in addressing student needs and preferences appropriately.

Scholarship programmes as a driver of Ecuadorian student mobility

The scholarship opportunities for higher education, science, technology and innovation offered to Ecuadorians wishing to study abroad will be presented by René Ramírez Gallegos, the current Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT). René has also served as a Chairman and President of various public institutions and organisations, including the Higher Education Council (CES) and Yachay, the City of Knowledge and was one of the contributors to the process of transforming Ecuador’s Higher Education System. He also has teaching experience and has published as an author and co-author an impressive list of books and journal articles.

Changing Landscapes: Meeting the needs of future workers

Álvaro Quijandría will discuss the future of work and the entrepreneurial climate in Peru and the LATAM region during our event in Lima.
Álvaro is currently the Head of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) portfolio at the World Bank Group´s Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice. His professional experience includes management of the Investment Climate Program of the IFC for LAC, he was also a Managing Partner of APOYO Consultoría – a leading business consultancy in Peru and the Andean region, an advisor to the Minister of Economics and Finance on economic policy and a member of the Board of Directors of various microfinance institutions in Peru, Bolivia and Mexico.

In Santiago, Andrés Cardemil O. will share the Chilean perspectives on current employment trends and job readiness of the LATAM youth. Andrés is the founder and CEO of HumanNet – an 800 strong human resources and business management organisation first established in Chile and since 2013 in Colombia. He has been a senior HR consultant for over 18 years and is a senior analyst on the Chilean and Latin American labour markets.
The technology outlook and new challenges for Latin America
When: 15-16 September
Where: Lima
Prof. Avid Román-González is an IEEE Senior Member, distinguished lecturer and Electronic and Systems Engineer. He has performed as a Consulting Engineer in the Peruvian Space Agency – CONIDA and the National Science, Technology and Innovation Technology Council (CONCYTEC) and has participated in research projects in the German and French national astronautics and space research centres (DLR and CNES, respectively). Avid also has an impressive list of publications. He is currently a Research Associate at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia – UPCH. To learn more about him, you can check his personal website.
During the event, Avid will speak about the future of technology and challenges in the field that Peruvian students face.
STEM UP: STEM subjects and women’s employability on the rise in Latin America

Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull is the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Development and Postdoctoral Affairs at UMBC and the founding Director of PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate that includes all universities within the University System of Maryland. She presents across the US and Puerto Rico on topics related to graduate student recruitment, retention and faculty development and is an award-winning international speaker for STEM equity, diversity and inclusion. Renetta is also Co-PI for the ADVANCE Hispanic Women in STEM Networking Conference and Co-leading ‘Women in STEM” projects for the Latin and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions. Renetta will share insights on STEM subjects, how these might be appealing to girls from the region and help them increase their employability prospects.
Lead the Way: Entrepreneurs in Latin America

Patricia Maldonado is an entrepreneur from Bolivia, winner of the 2014 ‘Women of Excellence/Entrepreneur of Americas’ award of the National Association of Female Executives New York. She has founded and successfully runs the socially responsible Fair Trade-certified Bolivian company, Nanay, which exports knitted clothing worldwide and also encourages other female entrepreneurs by installing them as heads of production groups.
Patricia will be speaking about her experiences with travel education and insights into the entrepreneurial landscape of Bolivia.
The Bilingual Target: Rising demand for English proficiency

Emerita Bañados is an associate professor and the Director of the UdeC English Online Program at Universidad de Concepción, an innovative EFL b-learning environment for Chilean citizens. Her expertise includes Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), design of multimedia courseware materials and language learning environments (b-learning/e-learning), intercultural telecollaboration for language learning and teacher training. She has been a CALL practitioner for over 20 years and has worked as a technical advisor for projects granted by the Chilean Ministry of Education for English learning with use of ICT in many universities.
